FM5528 (also known as Fudan Micro FM5528) is a low-cost,
contact-type logic encryption memory card IC manufactured by Shanghai
Fudan Microelectronics. It is a drop-in replacement and functional clone
of the popular SLE5528 (Infineon) chip. This IC is widely used in legacy
access control, membership cards, and pre-paid phone cards due to its
simple interface and basic security features.

Security Model (Logic Encryption)
The FM5528 is not a CPU smart card (no microcontroller).
It uses a simple state machine for data protection:
- Password
Authentication (PSC)
- 2-byte
Password
(16 bits) stored at the end of the memory (addresses 1022–1023).
- Error
Counter
(at address 1021): Initial value = 8. It decrements with each incorrect
password entry.
- Permanent
Lock:
If the counter reaches 0, the card becomes read-only
(write and password functions are permanently disabled). This is a
one-way fuse.
- Byte-Wise
Write Protection
- Each
byte in the main memory (0–1020) can be individually write-protected
(fused).
- Once
a byte is protected, it can never be modified again, even if the
password is known.

Security Status (Legacy Warning)
The FM5528 (like SLE5528) is considered legacy-grade security:
- The
2-byte password (65,536 combinations) is vulnerable to brute-force
attacks.
- It
lacks modern cryptography (AES, RSA) and secure key storage.
- Not
recommended for new high-security designs (e.g., payment, government
ID). Use Smart Card ICs with MCU (e.g., SLE78, FM1280) instead.
Why Choose FM5528?
- Cost-Effective: Extremely cheap
for large-volume, low-risk applications.
- Proven
Compatibility:
Works with millions of existing SLE5528 readers worldwide.
- Simple
Integration:
No complex drivers or OS needed; simple serial protocol.
- Basic Protection: Sufficient for discouraging casual data tampering in non-critical systems.
